Indian incense is made by creating a type of slurry of oils and resins, this is then hand rolled around into a cone shape. This is incense that is made entirely of resins & natural ingredients -- nothing synthetic. This method allows for very different scents and a distinctive quality that some love. Indian incense has been made this way for hundreds of years. This is what is considered ?traditional? incense. It?s more like the incense that has been burned for centuries in temples & that which has been used for ceremonial purposes. The fragrance of natural incense is VERY different than oil-dipped incense.
The method of preparation is similar to bread making. First, all the dry powders are weighed and placed together in a large tub in separate piles. Then the tree gum is dissolved with the oil. The dry powders are mixed together and the tree gum/oil mixture is added to the dry mixture. The ingredients are thoroughly mixed together by hand until the oils are completely absorbed. Water is added to this mixture and it is kneaded to a dough-like consistency called Atta. The cones are then dried in the sun.
